Inspired by Vincent

Guest post from Jo-Anne Clarke

I think that if we cannot be inspired to paint by humanity or study of our natural world, we should really start to examine ourselves to see what the problem is. We need to recognize beauty in all of its forms in this life, if we are to portray it as artists.

You wanted to know what inspired me to paint Vincent D'Onofrio?

I think that he reminded me of a guy that I used to know, and who I still think of from time to time. As for being a fan, I would not really count myself as having 'fan' status. I just enjoyed painting someone who had a nice smile and reminded me of happier times. My incapacity had got the better of me and I was immobile again and just needed a smile I guess. (I was hit by a car a long time ago, and the injuries that I received cause me a few probs every now and then.)
Then someone asked me if I would paint another picture - which is always good practice, and who would complain about painting a man who is handsome?
I enjoyed painting the second picture more because it shows a person and not a character, if you know what I mean, and I love to paint.

The show is fun to watch, and sometimes I watch the Criminal Intent program, and one called SVU because the bad guys get caught most of the time. Like everyone else, I am looking at the world and wondering why some of us go so wrong in life, and simple things like this show remind me that there are real people, doing the job in real life and catching those who are not quite ready to be kind, good and compassionate individuals. Gives you a bit of faith that though the world is in need of rescue, and real people do it all the time.

  3. Sadly, even a great subject like Vincent could not inspire me to do great work like this. Though I did once do a pretty good oil pastel picture of my cat...
