Bob - For Ann

This is for our dear Vixen Ann, because The Whole Wide World is her favorite film.
She said that Vincent captured the essence, the heart and soul, the raw emotion of Robert E Howard.

I think we all agree with that!
And may I add, Vincent looks just outstanding hot in suspenders and white shirt.

Life is a lamp with the glimmer gone,
A dank and a darkened cave;
Yet still I swear by the light of dawn,
And not by the grip of the grave.

- Robert E. Howard -

  1. oh my - thank you so much jazzy - this is beautiful and i truly appreciate your hard work - just for me - yeah!!!!!

...and an REH poem. Those few lines must have been written when he was in a good place, because so much of his poetry is very dark.

you know if it wasn't for vincent's portrayal i would never have found REH's powerful poetry and i am now the proud owner of two limited editions of his poetry books -

the wallpapers are beautiful too - i shall save them, which is saying something because mostly i only keep pics of my grandchildren

    again, thank you so much

  2. Yessss, Ann, today Bob is yours :)
Glad you like it! Thank you a lot for the inspiration.
Last year I did a post about Dan Ireland, and the research led me to Howard's collected works; melancholic, passionate and powerful stuff, indeed! And being a huge fan of H.P. Lovecraft I would love to read his correspondence with REH.

  6. Beautiful pictures..my favorite kiss scene in a movie! I have just begun to learn about H.P. Lovecraft - which is shame because we come from the same state and town!!! I just learned about him on Halloween..I would love read his correspondence with REH as well. I will have to do some research at the local library. Ann, I totally fell more in love with VDO after watching this film, if that were possible...all I can say is...sigh!!!

  7. try this website for some of REH's letters; there's just a few

    http://www.bigbadbarbarian.com/

there are also books out there of his and lovecraft's correspondence but they are all very expensive - and some poetry collections - very few are ever printed

i have Always Come Evening and in the front cover is reproduced, in his handwriting, one of his first poems - it was 1921, he was about 14/15 - also have #64 of Singers in the Shadows and also Solomon Kane (somehow i can't see my book club reading it)

finally a good biography is Blood and Thunder and of course the novalynne price book

i still cry a little when i see the film but i don't really watch it just for the story anymore; now mostly to appreciate the brilliant acting and the sizzling atmosphere - however i'll never forget when rachel saw it for the first time and she knew nothing about it, or knew that it was true - her eyes looked like pandas by the end and she'd worked her way through a box of kleenex - when she found out it was real, she totally lost it... aaaaah!

  9. Wonderful post Jazzy, both the collages and the choice of poem.

Seeing this film made me want to find out more about Robert E Howard too, because I actually knew nothing about him before this
