Criminal Intent is Over.

NEW YORK (Hollywood Reporter)

It's shake-up time for "Law & Order: Criminal Intent."

Sources from the "L&O" galaxy say that stars Vincent D'Onofrio, Kathryn Erbe and Eric Bogosian are expected to be phased out at various points during the series' upcoming ninth season.

Julianne Nicholson already has departed because she is having a baby. Executive producer Dick Wolf is turning to Jeff Goldblum, who joined the cast last season, to remain as lead detective in the series, along with Saffron Burrows, who was recently cast to replace Nicholson as Goldblum's partner.

It's a big change for a show that has weathered a lot of casting shifts since it began in 2001. D'Onofrio and Erbe have been there since the beginning, and Bogosian joined in 2006. Since then, the original pair have had to make room for Nicholson and Chris Noth, who left last year. Goldblum arrived in 2008.

D'Onofrio has been popular in his role. But "L&O:CI" is a USA Network show, after running on sister channel NBC. And USA, insiders point out, prefers lighter fare. Compared with D'Onofrio, Goldblum is more in the tradition of Tony Shalhoub's comic-dramatic "Monk."

Details about D'Onofrio, Erbe and Bogosian's exits are still unclear as the actors' deals are being worked out. It's possible that D'Onofrio will reprise his character in guest stints.

The network only recently renewed the series for a ninth season, slated to premiere in late spring with a two-part episode.

  1. Say it's NOT true ~~~~~ wailing and sobbing~~~~~(back of hand to brow), Oh, how will we live?!

Seriously, it's a very sad day but, we knew it would end sometime. Thanks SO much Mr. D and Ms. E for the terrific characters you brought to life.

As usual, USA took the cowardly route and couldn't tell us the truth up front. Maybe it's better that the CLASSY people leave the Un-classy people and let them die a slow and painful death.

  2. It is a very sad day. I just read the article on another website.

I agree - Criminal Intent is OVER! Done - there is no way that Jeff Goldblum can carry the show. We will grieve the loss of Goren and Eames. Even if they make "guest" appearances, it will not be the same. What the heck? How will we get our daily fix? Thankfully, I have tivoed about 35 episodes to get me thru a little bit of life.

Hopefully, Vincent will be on the large screen and will be directing more...

    oh, I am depressed now...crap!

  4. My problem is that wasn't their decision, but rather they were forced out because of money.

LOCI is Goren and Vincent, you can't have one without the other. It's like CSI without Grissom - it just doesn't work.

  5. To me, Vincent-films mean everything, and the ONLY reason to watch CI was Bobby. It was so great to see him walking around, thinking, doing pretty poses... well, all those unique Bobby-things.
Without Bobby CI is nothing and can go to hell.

  6. I've had all day to think about this now, and I'm still incredibly pissed off and very very sad :-(

I found Vincent because of CI, but he came to mean so much more than just a character on a show. Without him it won't be CI and I won't be watching it

  7. You know I'm with everyone here.
But there is, though, some consolation - Once Bobby is gone, Vincent will be able to do more movies - which is his passion.

The problem with the movie theory Jazzy is that it means we MIGHT get to see Vincent every 2 years - if we're lucky :0(

It's going to take me a while to get my head around that, considering I miss him dreadfully if we don't get a new picture for 3 months! The prospect of having to wait a YEAR, or more is just AWFUL....

(Sorry, you'll have to excuse me, I'm on a terrible downer over this at the moment..)

  9. NBC Confirms Vincent D'onofrio is leaving Law and Order after the two part premiere.

So he will only be on 2 episodes.

LOS ANGELES - Changes are afoot at “Law & Order: Criminal Intent,” with charter cast member Vincent D’Onofrio exiting the USA Network series and recent recruit Jeff Goldblum taking over full-time.

D’Onofrio’s character, Detective Robert Goren, will say goodbye in a two-hour hand-off episode to open the ninth season early next year, “Criminal Intent” creator and executive producer Dick Wolf said Friday.

Goldblum, who joined the series last season, will continue as Detective Zack Nichols in the NYPD Major Case Squad.

“After eight seasons, and with the addition of Jeff Goldblum, now is the perfect time for me to explore other acting opportunities,” D’Onofrio said in a statement.

He added, “I wouldn’t be surprised if Goren pops up from time to time.”

  11. I actually feel this would be much easier to accept if the show was being canceled rather than him being "pushed" out.

I guess once the shock wears off, I'll remember this will make him happier - so it's all good.

Just one less show to watch on TV - no conflict with True Blood on Sunday nights now!

  12. One less TV show I will be watching. So be it. I had a feeling the end was near for Vincent. I think he really does want to move on to other projects, i.e., directing films and appearing in them. I wish Vincent, Katie, and Eric well. They will certainly be missed.

  13. Well I was pissed when I first read this just after 5 a.m. this morning, as the day has gone on I don't feel any better I'm still pissed. What is wrong with TPTB are they that stupid that they think that everyone will still tune in to watch when the 2 main characters are gone !!!!! Lets face it Vincent is the heart and soul of the show.

  14. I say the USA Network is the devil incarnate and should go back to hell!

I say we boycott this network completely (except for the two final episodes with our beloved Bobby)...

  15. The moment they cast Jeff Goldblum I said this would happen.

  16. I hate them all. It's the day I've been dreading, but I always thought it would be Vincent's choice, or they just wouldn't renew at all. To continue without him makes no sense and shows that these people are not even expets in their own field.

  17. OMG, what a weekend for my Internet to go down! I've spent the whole weekend in hell trying to fix my Internet service. I must say USA has finally signed it's own death certificate. If Vincent goes, so do I. I will no longer watch any show on that network. How stupid are these people? Or should I say how greedy are they. You can kiss CI goodbye. Without Vincent it's not worth watching.
