In the year of 1987, my friends and I smuggled Pink Floyd-LPs across the inner German border (from West Germany where we lived, over to the DDR). Our action was very risky. In the DDR, so called capitalistically west music - especially Pink Floyd's "The Wall" - was strictly forbidden by law.
Pink Floyd staged a concert performance of "The Wall" in Berlin (capitol city of former DDR) on July 21, 1990 to commemorate the fall of the Berlin Wall and as a fundraising effort for The World War II Memorial Fund for Disaster Relief. This performance featured guests including Cyndi Lauper, Bryan Adams and Van Morrison.

I heard this news last night and was very saddened - Pink Floyd were a huge part of my musical upbringing and have had a profound influence on me - in line with the Beatles and Joni Mitchell and my own musical style.
ReplyDeleteA Big Loss for the Music World!!!
ReplyDeleteThank You Mr Wright for all that you have made!!
Pink Floyd was always on in my colleg dorm room...
ReplyDeleteYes, this was very sad news indeed.
ReplyDeleteI can remember vividly the first time I heard Arnold Layne played on Radio 1 in 1967 when I was on my lunch break at college. My friends and I thought it was great and I have loved them ever since.
Sorry to hear this. Love Pink Floyd!
ReplyDeleteI heard about this earlier. Definitely a huge loss. Pink Floyd is one of my top ten all time favorite bands.
ReplyDeleteSaddened to hear the news. Doesn't everyone remember the first time they saw The Wall, i can remember it vividly! So before it's time!
