(Part I)
Vidding seems to be second most popular way of expressing yourself via internet. Reading fan fiction you need to put the picture together, but while watching a video, all you need is try to make sense out of what one person tried to tell/show you. You don't have to sit and try hard to picture in what position they had sex. It's all visual.

I don't write fictions, so I compensate lack of this talent by making videos. It's almost the same but for the limited material vidders have as opposed to the whole dictionary writers’ posses. In no way writing is easy, of that I'm sure. What drives all of us is the idea. That little annoying thing that can be stuck in our head for days until we are pressed by the physical urge to actually put it down on the paper/Windows Movie Maker.
Lately, however, it seems that people are mostly driven by the honours/ number of views their videos get rather than by muse/inspiration/urge, call it what ever you like.

How is that? Isn't it all about being fascinated by the only idea of creating something, being able to express yourself, enjoy making/having crack discussing it? At least that's what I thought.
Ohh, me, so naive.
You Tube seems not to be so interesting all of a sudden. 'Old' vidders leave, taking all their great work with them. Sad, isn't it?!
However, not all young video makers are bad. No, God, in no way!
Just... not the same.
Maybe it's due to the fact that time's passing and everything's changing. God knows, we'll see.

Sadly, YT became a childish race for subscribers.
But I hear this very often: "Take a popular song and then add ANY clips so you can make 10 vids a month which means more subs".
Please get me right, you can meet a lot of friendly people at YT; some of them are wonderful and lovable. Not just because they make and/or comment on videos. In my eyes, they are the heart and soul of YT!
There is still creativity and talent out there and I am thankful for. Many videos/slideshows are brilliant, but there is also business and commerce - more than ever before! Proud of subscribers and honors - why not? Self-promotion - why not? UNLESS it is more important than the video itself.
To 'share' Vincent by videos shouln't be a business - it should be fun in a good way.
And - call me crazy - I still believe that Vincent was made for fun (figuratively)!
Thank you for reading
I expect YouTube tries hard to generate this kind of competitive behaviour because they see it as a way of generating more traffic to their site, more hits, more revenue/advertising, that sort of thing.
ReplyDeleteAnd then, the quality of the artistic product gets compromised.
I was ranting on The Cat this morning about how unscrupulous television companies, looking to eke out another few pennies of revenue, will either cut whole lines (remember when USA network cut the "fall from the bridge" line from 'Untethered? WTF?), or by not showing things in wide-screen format, cutting out half the image you are trying to see. Or sticking their goddamned logo all over our hero's face.
I guess YouTube is not very different. And people ... the 'suckers and the mugs' (thank you, Orson), just keep falling for it.
Have you investigated any of the other vidding sites that are out there? I know that MySpace TV is one, for example ... goodness knows what it is like though.
Suckers and Mugs, and don't forget to mention the Sycophants.
ReplyDeleteApropos Untenthered: I uploaded an Untethered vid. Song: personal jesus by Marilyn Manson. YT placed advertisement next to this vid from Scientology church. Irony! Churches and politician are sponsors - i hate it.
What makes me realy sad is, that vidders started dissing each other. Envy and bad competition in the name of commerce. It sux! Some left because they weren't able (or willing) to stand the pressure anymore.
Rose created sites for LOCI stuff.
www.broken-road.com (awards site)
www.rose.broken-road.com (vidding site)
My bet these are good places - sorry, haven't had time to check it out yet.
Too true - Vincent was made for fun and having fun with; which is why I don't understand it when people deliberately leave comments to belittle him or just be plain rude about him.
ReplyDeleteSadly, I'm always running out of VDO-time, so YouTube isn't somewhere I tend to hang out.
And I get really cross when others decide what 'offends' their delicate sensibilites MUST therefore 'offend' ours and start to censor stuff accordingly when it's not THEIRS to interfere with to begin with.
Bravo, Diane! Well said. Also, keep in mind, folks, that this is always the way with Capitalism. It is how the U.S. economy is structured (for the most part). Often, in a Capitalist economy, the better business is, the more "the product" suffers. Things become homogenous and mediocre, instead of truly artistic or stand-out. And it's all part of what businesses try to do: dumb down America, so everyone wants the same thing at the same time. Kind of like housing in the suburbs. Yuck. LOL
ReplyDeleteI' always pleased when people find my vids and comment on them, but I rarely even check to see how many views they have. When I do, I'm oftren amazed that, say the Two Soups sketch which I just shared but had no creaive input into, is one of the most popular.
ReplyDelete'Cos for me it's the Vincent ones every time!
I go to roses site often Jazzy and she has some great videos both VDO/Ci and other works. People can subscibe to me if they want to their not under obligation to do it as it is up to them if it they want to-most of those sub 4 subs are all kids anyway-why do they allow 14 yr old kids on there beats me. Yeah and I also hate those flipping ads too-but I guess that cannot be helped.
ReplyDeleteWell i can tell you from a gal who doesn't have a legion of subscribers that i thought it was supposed to be about sharing your devotion and appreciation to the work by being compelled to fight with your computer to try to share your ideas and joy at the man and his work. However somewhere in there i think yt turned into this who's the most popular junior high. I still go check, i am addicted to vids but it isn't the same. It's like the FUN left and all that remains is the competitive spirit! Kind of the reason i don't make many vids anymore, feel like no one is really watching for enjoyment but to see if anyone has one upped them!
ReplyDeleteFight it is, Jenz. I quit sharing love for a while coz my WMM wears me out. Not Vince, but my Wmm wears me out, can you imagine? What a tricky life!
ReplyDeleteAli:)

ReplyDeleteReally? No way, jazzy. That's funny how it all works for yt, even our best intentions.
Ali:)
I don't spend much time looking at videos (sorry)...youtube gets to me after a while! It's somewhere to store my vids..and their embedded player works better than photobuckets.BUT..I do enjoy reading comments that people leave, makes the effort of fighting WMM worth while :-)
ReplyDeleteOh,and I can't just make a slideshow and put music to it..my vids nearly always start with hearing a song, then not being able to rest until I've made a video..it's gets into your head and there is nothing you can do about it LOL
Thanks for the pep talk ali i still fight it but sometimes it gets the better of me! You always fight the goodfight and i enjoy them!
ReplyDeleteI agree with everyone here.
ReplyDeleteHowever, I'm tired of YT. I was going to leave but decided to stay on. But it's getting stale for me and the site has become all about money and other profit.
Kids (Jane mentioned it) are posting total junk that gets featured, so YT and vidding is not what it used to be.
Probably I will post a vid now and then, set as private (yeah, love the comments, too) but nothing much more than that.
I prefer to spend time at the blogs where the "fun" is.
