Subject: The best kept secret in television drama, the acting expertise of Vincent D'Onofrio.
Hey all I have a question that i think we all deserve an answer for.....
How could D'Onofrio not receive an
Emmy Nomination for his work this season?
Emmy Nomination for his work this season?
Yes friends how is it possible? Let's examine the work of this man in the past year.
We watched as he made us feel every moment of Goren's grief in AMENDS. His fragile hold on his control as he faced persecution from the ENTIRE department, the jabs at his sanity and his trouble with authority undermining him. In Self-Made D'Onofrio showed us more of his talents with his emotional reactions to the corrupt Shill.
Then comes UNTETHERED! A powerhouse performance that by far rivals any one of the nominated actors for the Emmy's this year but I'd venture to say anyone getting an Oscar nod next Feb. Was there a moment when you weren't suffering with him, feeling his pain, on the verge of anger and tears for him (Personally I spent time yelling accusing and crying at the tv screen).
He followed that gut wrenching work up with another, PURGATORY.
And if dear friends you had any doubts about his ability to totally emesh himself in his work FRAME should settle all of your arguments. On this rollercoaster of a ride our wounded Goren was not only kicked while he was down but stomped on with golf cleets!

How could one man produce such unbelievably riviting work and be ignored?
How could the Emmy Committee chose the likes of James Spader, yet again sleeping his way through another season of Boston Legal. Let's not mention why yet again we feel a need to reward Hugh Laurie. Yes yes yes he does a fine job as Dr. Gregory House but isn't it the same old same old really. Did he wow you this year? He didn't me! To be honest Gabriel Byrne didn't wow me on In Treatment either, i felt Blair Underwood was the unsong hero of that but i digress...
How was he overlooked? Was it because he is no longer the standard male leads weight? Is it because Law and Order Criminal Intent is the ignored red headed step child of the Law and Order Series? Is it because it was on USA network this season before moving to reruns on NBC?
None of these arguments hold any water for me, I firmly believe someone is prejudiced against our brilliant actor. He continues to without fanfair, paparazzi incidents, drunk driving arrests or other forms of bad behavior quietly with dignity and grace act. Pure and simple the man does his job with the skill of an 20 million dollar actor while getting none of the money or respect of one. Oh and fyi I was deeply offended when it was shown that Goldblum (internal cringe) will make a whopping $250,000 an episode, is he the only actor on the show?
Well that's my rant folks if you disagree then okay, i'll be more than happy to listen but i'm telling you right now... I'm NOT BUYING it!
Course to coin on of my fave comedians Dennis Miller: "Of course that's just my opinion, I could be wrong!"

I look at it this way - an Emmy is too far beneath the level of his awesome talent to be accepted, even if it was offered, which it won't be. He'll never win one for the same reason he'll be forever be denied an Oscar; he doesn't, hasn't and won't 'play' the Hollywood game, he refuses to kiss ass, and treasures his independent spirit - as do I. Bless Vincent, @?!@ them.
ReplyDeleteI wouldn't worry about the amount Jeff is getting since both Vincent and Chris get more than that, love the picture when was that taken Jazzy?-Yes the reason why he won't ever get a big time award like an Oscar or our Baftas or an Emmy is that he don't play "their" game.
ReplyDeleteAs of last year Vincent made 350,000 per episode, don't know how much of a bump he got this year. He's still the top dog!
ReplyDeleteThe man is amazing,he is undaunted by the critics, his talent is unquestionable - he is a gifted actor who makes acting look easy. He is elegant, beautiful and far superior to other actors currently gracing our TV screens.
ReplyDeleteIn the seven seasons I've been watching CI I have always been perplexed as to why VDO has never gotten an Emmy nod. Or for that matter an Oscar nod! I mean really look at his performance in The Whole Wide World. He makes you fall in love with him, he breaks your heart and he leaves you with an indelible memory of the man (Robert Howard) and of his own electrifying performance. That KISS alone should be Oscar worthy! I dream about that kiss!
Maybe the nominating committee members are just jealous of a real man who can act circles around the other pretentious and self loving actors that fill Hollywood.
Oh my, do I sound bitter? Thankfully VDO is a humble person who is comfortable and confident in his own acting ability.
I have rambled on for far too long, but one last thing before I go - the vote concerning Vincent's best feature - I would have included two additional categories "his tongue" (which should be listed as one of the seven wonders of the world) and an "all of the above" category. For those of us who just think that the man doesn't have a bad feature.
Sorry if I went on too long.
Artistonthehudson
Artistonthehudson,
ReplyDeletei have forgotten the tongue! holy crap, where was my mind?????
i am ashamed and bury my head in - sadly not in his groin - but in ashes :-(
OH My God, I forgot to mention that he is brillant! Oh yes, his amazing mind is just one of my favorite VDO features! The man is yummy!
ReplyDeletethe picture was taken in spring time 2008 (if anyone knows details please let us know).
ReplyDeletei think the emmy awards are political affairs and vince is not a sycophant; so he is not in. it's a plus for him!
on the other hand i would like to see him on the red carpet, yummm.
(or on red sheets ;P)
I'm not sure when they submit their emmy reels -- are some of these later eps (purgatory, betrayed, frame) available for consideration NEXT year? I also heard that the eps they submitted for both VDO and KE were not (by fan reaction) stellar.
ReplyDeleteHey good points everyone, he is too good for them, but i still think he was ROBBED! Course for me Goren and Eames are the show so and i still think that's paying GOldblum too much when he hasn't shown us he's earned it!
ReplyDeleteartistonthehudson i don't think you sound bitter just informed :D!
judith and diane lovely sentiments especially the @?!@ them!

ReplyDeleteSorry, that was me!
ReplyDeleteThat picture of him was taken by one of Kimberley's friends who got oh-so-LUCKY on 15th July (Vincent was filming 'Frame')
I love it when people post pictures of Vincent "on the streets of New York". He always looks so happy and willing to be photographed. I live in New York City and I am always on the prowl to see if VDO is somewhere in the crowd. No luck so far though.

ReplyDeleteHe is far too good for them. He deserves a category of award all his own. Shall we create it for him, Vixens?
ReplyDeleteWho's reading whose mind here? I absolutely agree on everything. and while I do love Laurie/House, his performance this season didn't leave any expression on me.
ReplyDeleteAnd about emmy/oscar - give man a Nobel price, why take it so low! He deserves better than the best!
Ali:)
What a great idea. Any thoughts as to what it could be? Besides a phallic symbol of course. He wins that category hands (and feet) down (if I may take the liberty of a little humor). Suggestions, anyone?
ReplyDeleteit MUST be a phallic symbol! a shoe would be my choice; or why not a python?
ReplyDeleteand no doubt we have to give him the prize personally!
no wait, i paint my body golden and call myself Emmy.
ReplyDeleteJazzy ... sounds like you want to give him a "JAZZY," not a real Emmy. LOL! But that's a good thing ... worth more anyway! XOXO
ReplyDeleteThe only thing about Vincent winning/not winning awards that really bugs me is that his failure to do so this far means that his fans have not had a public occasion on which to show him our appreciation.
ReplyDeleteIt would give us the opportunity to say "We told you so, idiots!" to the entertainment establishment, and might also impact in a positive way on Vincent's career.
For me, it's all about expressing appreciation. I have no way to do that to the man himself. There isn't even a fool-proof way to ask someone else to do it for me, you know? If he won an award then maybe I would be able to see him stand up and receive a huge cheer and round of applause just for himself.
He's been called one of the greatest actors of his generation. Does he even KNOW THAT?
I can only suppose he knows. But I cannot be certain.
I can rant about the man's acting skills till we are blue in the face on the pages of these blogs, but in truth I have absolutely no way of knowing how much of it reaches his ears.
(And there are sections of it I hope DON'T meet his ears! OMG! When I went to NYC to meet another actor I used to drool over, his girlfriend knew who I was, and gave me several long and searching looks ..!)
I'm not saying that Vincent has no clue how his work is affecting us all, but his modest comments in the past when others have told him about his legions of on-line fans suggest to me that he might not be fully aware of what we all think and feel.
snark, my angel aaaaaw. i'm yours, for sure. hey, why don't you present yourself to vince as 'Oscar'?!
ReplyDeleteWhile we are on rants, one of my latest pet peeves is the Actor's Studio. While I love James Lipton's show I don't understand why he interviews people like Elton John and Dave Chappelle and not VDO! Seriously, what's that all about. Elton John - really?!
ReplyDeleteAnd I agree with you Jazzy, I think you'd make a lovely golden prize to present to VDO, as long as we can all be there at the unveiling. Enjoy the last gasp of summer everyone.
don't worry, artistonthehudson; of course you are in, and the award after show-party will be "THE" happening!
ReplyDeleteI for one would love to see Vincent do an Actor's Studio, can you imagine the stories he'd have, the insights, me drooling while he spoke for an hour!
ReplyDeleteAs for the 'jazzy' award he has more than earned. I think a good idea would be every other week one of us could be an award! The award that keeps on giving!
... and can you imagine the stories he'd have AFTER we visited him?
ReplyDeletejenz, your "by turns award" idea is of genius!
I totally agree...I wonder who decides these things...OBVIOUSLY not Vincent's fans!
ReplyDeleteActually I know about the photo Jazzy. I got it from a myspace friend who met Vincent and Kathryn while they were filming this summer in New York. I have several others from that same day. This person also had Vince sign a few autographs for his other myspace friends and I was lucky that he thought of me and got one with my name on it too. If anyone wants to see the rest of the photos, just let me know!
ReplyDeleteso you are "MY" kimberly from myspace?? LOL, how cool!
ReplyDeletethere are more photos? pleeeeez share them!!!!
Yup, I'm "your" Kim from myspace. How do I send you the pics or post them to you? I used that one on my signature for the USA board...but I have a few more.
