Praying to be straight - - ???

So I caught a blurb on AOL news about how Sarah Palin's church promotes gay "conversion" and prayer and "therapy" (God only knows what constitutes as therapy for this) to help people fight their homosexual urges.

I am generally not one to harp in on political debates because I feel there are other people out there who have similar views and who can express the issues more intelligently than I can, but this whole idea of homosexuality being a choice just baffles me.

First off, who in their right mind, who is part of a society that is so fixated on being normal and popular, would choose to be gay?

I just don't buy this idea that you can train someone to be something that that are instinctively not. I don't think our sexuality is something we learn, but something that is biological and instinctual. That's not to say that our environment doesn't effect our reactions to sex and our own sexuality, but I don't think that it dictates it.

Several years ago I saw a really interesting documentary on MSNBC (there's actually an Law & Order: SVU episoded based on this case) where two twin boys were born, but one of them was very badly injured during his circumcision. The damage was so severe that he would never be a fully functional male. So, this extreme doctor suggested that the parents raise him as a girl.

And that's what they did. As a baby he had surgeries to make him look as if he was a girl and then when he hit puberty was given hormones to develop as a girl. The family treated him as a girl and encouraged him to act accordingly, but he had no interest in being a girl. He wasn't attracted boys, he had no interest in "girly" things, and a part of him always new that something was not right with him.

When he finally did discover what happened to him he began the process of turning back into a male, but there was already so much physical and psychological damage done.

It was a very sad story and I think he ended up killing himself when he got older.

But I think that just goes to show people that fighting your own nature is only going to be detrimental to your life. How many families do we see torn apart because one parent finally admits that they've been living lie, all for the sake of keeping up appearances?

As long as they aren't hurting themselves or others, just let people be who they are and quite frankly I don't particularly want to believe in an elitist God.
If there is a god, he/she/it, should be above petty differences.

  1. As a gay man, I don't think anyone could say it better than Lynnez. The vast majority of OBJECTIVE SCIENTIFIC STUDIES (not the preachings of fanatical, right-wing religious nuts) REPEATEDLY show that homosexuality is a genetic predisposition. HONEST and OBJECTIVE assessments of homosexuality throughout history have shown that homosexuality, as a minority of the population, has always been present in human societies and in a large part of the animal population, as well. Such a predisposition, IMHO, points to a logical explanation: that homosexuality is one of Mother Nature's ways of controlling population growth ... and I might add ... a preferrable alternative to famine, disease, natural disasters, and the inherent "need" of humanity to kill one another.

A handful of the studies to which I refer are listed as follows:

"Potential for homosexual response is prevalent and genetic," Santtila P et. al.; Department of Psychology, Abo Akademi University.

"Genetic investigations provide strong evidence for a heritable component to male and female sexual orientation," Rahman Q et. al.; School of Psychology, University of East London.

"Genetic research using family and twin methodologies has produced consistent evidence that genes influence sexual orientation," Mustanski BS et. al.; Department of Psychology, Indiana University.

"The survival of a human predisposition for homosexuality can be explained by sexual orientation being a polygenetic trait that is influenced by a number of genes," Miller EM.; University of New Orleans.

"Human sexual orientation has a heritable component," Pillard RC et. al.; Department of Psychiatry, Boston University School of Medicine.

  2. If Nature's plan was to control population growth, why hasn't Nature created people who got a libido and people who got no libido at all? But in fact the libido is the strongest instinct that humanity got (thanks goddess, lol). The gene theory would consequently mean, that sexual preferences are hereditary (like a person's high); but it isn't so.
I rather suppose that childhood/puberty experiences (we save tiny details onto our unconscious mind) have a large effect.

On the other hand, who cares?
Why can't people just say there are differences, so what?!

  3. I thinks this "church association" must to carried about REALS PROBLEM!!!!
Love is Love between man/woman two women or two men...
Is a respect of an Human dignity...
These people want to talk about depravity let's talk about the hundreds childrens who were abuses by priest... that's a fact!!!
Let the people live in the way they want, if they are consenting and in the possibility to make a choice, i don't see the problem..
You must "clean" our own HOUSE before judging the rest of the world..

I'd actually like to know who the hell it is that defines what's 'normal' anyway?!

Love between two people is LOVE, irrespective of gender. As long as it's between consenting adults, it's no one's business anyway.

  5. "Such a predisposition, IMHO, points to a logical explanation: that homosexuality is one of Mother Nature's ways of controlling population growth" -- that's a very interesting theory, snarkangel. i had never thought of such a logical explaination, but it's a much better thought than it being a mistake or fluke...some criss-crossing of wires.

But I also agree at the end of the day people shouldn't have to explain why they love who they love. There are plenty of straight couples who personality wise make less sense than some gays couples, but if it works for them, then who are any of us to say "they could do better" or "what does she see in him" or "he needs to be with a woman and not a man."

Oh and Jazzy, thanks for the plug on my fanfiction blog.

  6. wow! what a topic, fascinating.i've learnt something because i never thought of it as a way of controlling population. most interesting. i have seen the documentary about the twin boys and i found it very sad.i think circumcision is a horrid thing to do and female circuncision is even more barbaric. thanks for a good topic.

  7. Just as a by-the way, the actor who played the twins in SVU is the same one who played the young singer in Happy Family. Recently he was in CSI, too, all grown up to teenage estate. He is a phenomenal actor.

  9. Nice to see Lynnez's post here. See, Lynnez, I told you, you should speak out more. You are intelligent, thoughtful and you express yourself well.

This is a most important election and people need to speak out. People need to be educated about what kind of an extreme, right wing nut Sarah Palin truly is.

And Val -- I agree that boy who played the twins on SVU was brillant.

  11. It amazes me that in 2008 we still must have this be an issue of debate. For me there is no debate, genetics will win out every time, ppl are the ones that feel a need to explain things to make themselves feel better. Religion that was created to control peoples behavior has made it seen as an illness or choice. From a genetic standpoint there is NO argument, it is seen in every species and after all we are all just another species on the planet. However when we claim to be more evolved it's unfathomable beliefs like this that make me wonder how evolved or farther advanced we really are!
